Financial (stock market) Projects
StockWatch "Technology Preview" - Information Acquisition, Integration and Analysis

The purpose of this application is to provide "something more" for people who actively trade on momentum in the stock market "Day Traders".

Here are some of the objectives of our early work:

  1. learning experience
  2. functional requirements and analysis
  3. performance and reliability evaluations
  4. architectural alternatives and feasibility
  5. constraints, tradeoffs, etc.

The goal is to build something to integrate resources, many disparate and cumbersome, presently used by Day Traders into a "more information at your fingertips" toolset.  We are also investigating ways to capture, process and distribute data that is not currently available.

StockWatch Product Information

Here's what StockWatch does now:

  • tracks 1000's of stocks trade-by-trade (each buy, sell and volume) in realtime
  • sorts and displays Gap, Chg, Hi-, Lo+, Spd, Acc, Rng, Scn along with CurVol and PreVol
  • stores and charts high/low price and buy/sell volume at a one (1) minute interval throughout the day
  • provides a buy/sell volume chart zoom window of 15 min - 10 hours span
  • stores and charts 30 minutes of 5 second price information (1-30 minute display window)
  • shows Float, Short, Inst % Held, Book Value, Beta, PE, EPS and Industry Sector
  • talks directly to DBC (Newswatch) servers for "News at your fingertips" on all StockWatch symbols
  • interfaces directly with YAHOO Message boards, strips AD's and presents a clean list to browse
  • shows price and trade alerts for all symbols based on user preferences (#trades and price delta)
  • scans, sorts and displays price delta's and buy/sell trades within a user defined 5-150 second range
  • TBD more...

If you're interested in learning more about StockWatch or would like to be involved in its evolution, please send email to nbates@tiac.net or /msg "nbates" in #mbtrading or #daytraders.  Good Trading!

PS. I thank RHD and the Team @ MB Trading for their continued support throughout this project.

Commercial Projects
LifePlans Family Caring Network - Systems and Solution Design

The LifePlans project was a complete technology re-engineering effort.  In the beginning they were running an Oracle database on a Banyn network server.  The setup had already reached its full capacity, now taking ~30 hours to complete a run of daily reports.

There were also many new requirements stemming from a new contract for Long Term Insurance assessments.  The LifePlans daily assessment processing activity was expected to quadruple within 2-3 months.

Their existing environment was was 2 client PC's and one server PC system.

We designed and implemented a new client-server architecture:

  1. moving off of Banyn and onto Windows NT Servers
  2. adding redundancy - database mirroring and failover
  3. purchase and setup of 25 new client PC's for to-be-hired personnel
  4. integrating 2 high-end network print servers
  5. creating 5 account manager PC workstations with dedicated printers and label makers

For software there were two applications and associated databases with 2-3 years worth of data which needed to be migrated, then re-written (for performance and architectural reasons).

A number of applications were written to fully automate (with the exception of some incoming paper Faxes) the entire 'n' step operation of receiving an assessment request, entering the customer and client information and assigning the client information to one of 2500 country agencies (and an associated account manager).

Once a client was assigned then the agency was required to schedule an interview with the client within 'n' number of days.  All states needed to be tracked; client not home, client rescheduled, client sick, client deceased, etc.

On a nightly basis all of the information changes needed to be uploaded to an IBM mainframe.

In addition, to avoid the need to Fax assessment requests, agencies required that Order Stations be equipped (new software and hardware) and shipped to their local offices.  These systems were queried by LifePlan's new servers early each morning and all of the new data was automatically added into a local system database.

All of this required new development:

  1. Databases
  2. Server processing
  3. Daily batch uploads and downloads
  4. Remote data entry applications
  5. In-house data entry, processing and administrative tracking
  6. Workflow and automated routing
  7. Alerts for scheduled activities out of phase or late
  8. Client and Customer tracking, billing and accounting
  9. Statistical analysis of client information
  10. System watchdog processes, administrative alerts and failover processing

All in all quite a job...

Bottom line: Our Customer 'LifePlans' was very happy with what we provided them.

They recovered their full investment (hardware, software and development expenses) in just few months and also performed a quantitative analysis of their operational efficiency (before and after the project) and were ecstatic with the results!

Special thanks to Kevin and Denise Liston for their help and support with this project!
